NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - As many as three quarters of American men with erectile dysfunction have no idea what they're getting. A new survey shows the cost of Viagra is on the order of $5 to $100 a pill, the first prescription-only treatment for erectile dysfunction.

The results show that nearly three quarters of American men with erectile dysfunction are not able to get a prescription for Viagra, the most commonly prescribed ED medication for men.

A survey conducted by the National Institutes of Health found that about 25 percent of men with erectile dysfunction will have no insurance, a figure that's higher than three out of four for other men.

But if you want to get a Viagra prescription, you may have to pay a premium for it.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, is the first to quantify the cost of Viagra, and the second to show that the drug's cost is more than 100 percent of its advertised price.

The study, led by researchers at Vanderbilt University, surveyed over 500,000 men, all in their 40s or 60s, from 1998 to 2010, with a median age of 59. Only men in their 80s and 90s took the study.

The men surveyed were all over the country. About 80 percent of them had been treated for erectile dysfunction and about 40 percent had never had any insurance. But the data show the cost of Viagra is on the order of $5 to $100 a pill, the first prescription-only treatment for erectile dysfunction.

The researchers said that a big part of the problem with this survey is that it is voluntary, not a mandatory one, so men who want to use the drug can take a pill instead. And that's good news for those who are looking for a cheap, affordable treatment for erectile dysfunction.

But there's another major problem with this study: The men didn't have insurance.

The survey is a good example of why health insurance companies are so expensive to produce.

The results from the National Health Insurance Data System show that the average age of men with erectile dysfunction is 59.

There are no insurance plans for Viagra, the drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. But most insurance plans don't cover Viagra at all. The most common erectile dysfunction treatments are:

  • Penis pumps
  • Flushies
  • Cialis
  • Spin pumps

If you're looking to get a prescription for Viagra, you may have to pay a premium.
